A permit is needed when maintenance work can only be carried out if normal safeguards are dropped or when new hazards are introduced by the work. Don’t assume that your system is a good one just because you have not yet had a serious accident. An HSE survey showed that a third of all accidents in the chemical industry were
maintenance-related, the largest single cause being a lack of, or deficiency in, permit-to-work systems.
The course is designed for anyone who needs to complete, authorise or check Permit to Work Systems. In addition to looking at good practice and getting practical experience delegates will learn about what the law says, HSE expectations, common reasons for failure of PTW systems and good and bad examples from across the industry.

The identification and use of relevant process safety metrics over the full life cycle of a process is one of the key elements of a process safety management system.
Process safety incidents usually involve a number of root causes, many of which involve the degradation of management systems, or worse, complete failure of management system activities. Organisations should monitor the performance of management activities rather than wait for failures to occur or rely on infrequent audits to identify latent management system failures.
PSPI’s are essential to aid the near-real-time monitoring of the effectiveness of the process safety management system and provide input to continuous improvement. Such performance monitoring allows problems to be identified and corrective actions to be taken before a serious incident occurs.
This course will provide an overview of current guidance, accepted good practice and the management processes needed to help participants develop an integrated approach to developing, monitoring and improving business performance linked to process safety performance indicators.
